Lawyers for 16 men in a lawsuit against Exxon Mobile Corp. called the energy giant “reckless and reprehensible” during closing arguments last week in a case accusing Exxon of knowingly exposing workers to dangerously radioactive material in used oil-drilling pipes. According to the lawsuit, Exxon knew of the risk of radiation exposure at its site in Harvey, La., since the early 1930s. Plaintiffs accuse the company of withholding the information to avoid regulatory charges from the federal government. “Exxon recklessly put profits above workers’ safety,” the plaintiffs’ lawyer told jurors in court last week, and is asking for $17 million in damages.
